Flip through any women’s fashion magazine today, and you’ll be
sure to find plenty of sultry gazes and no shortage of what some might call
gratuitous nudity. But relatively new Muslim fashion glossy Ala is breaking the mold with a
“conservative chic” approach, and has found extreme success in Turkey.
Ala debuted in June 2011 and editor, Ebru Yayindag, explains that,
contrary to the (ostensible) ethos of every other fashion-focused magazine in
the world, the clothes featured are not supposed to make a woman look
attractive. Instead, per Muslim tradition, women are photographed with their
bodies covered (with the exception of the hands, feet, and face). In a
